Ultimate Benefits Of Barley

I have been drinking barley all my life, not knowing the other hidden benefits and real facts. Again, my wifey had studied the Chinese Medicine from the Beijing's professors in earlier years and pointed out to me that Barley is more than just a mere cooling drink for our body. It has medicinal properties that could even treat various lesser known ailments.

My recently widowed father is suffering from prostate cancer which seems to be showing signs of recovery. Other than this, he is healthy with good appetite. He has swollen feet which is better known as Edema or the feet that contains water retention. This Edema has slowed down his walking as he feels unstable with his soles which wobbles like plastic bags full of water!

The doctor in the hospital could not offer me the right prescriptions to treat his feet. My wife was quick to share with me that the big & small grained barley is the right supplementary drink to get rid of Edema. I went to the largest Chinese Medicine Store inside One-Utama to buy several packets.

The above left bigger grain is suitable to cool or treat the lower bottom of our human bodies. The right smaller grain is suitable to cool or treat the upper part of our bodies. The above package costs RM2.20 and comes in a combination of both big and smaller grains which will nourish the whole entire body at one go.

Take a closer look on the extra bottle I bought. It clearly says "Reduces water retention and cures edema". I believe that it would help to drain away all the trapped water around your face, tummy and legs!

  4. Ooohh barley drink.. I usually buy two types.. One type is the normal smaller grain one.. The other type is the bigger one you showed in the picture, I call it "pun sang suk" barley.. Direct translation means "half raw half cooked" barley.. The paed usually recommends to boil this "half raw half cooked" barley for kids when they are heaty or having fever.. I tried boiling it for the boys and they hated it even though I've already added rock sugar.. It taste like burnt popcorn, but since they are so good for health, I mixed them into milk powder and feed them..
Thanks for sharing, now only I know bigger grain is good for the bottom and smaller grain good for the upper.. To me, barley is good for cooling the body, but toddlers/babies drink bigger grains one during fever, whereas bigger kids can drink the smaller grain barley..

  7. i love barley dei.. in fact when i go to kopitiam or even cafes, i don't order coffee or tea, but either cina teh ais, leng suey ais orbarley ais kosong.. yes, i specifically want kosong, because i find they always make the drink too sweet and now i am very used to drinking unsweetened barley water already.. while many people hate eating the grains, i would actually welcome more, i enjoy munching barley grains actually..

  8. i have long heard about the benefits of barley, in terms of helping to reduce water retention.. but i think best is you have it unsweetened, and it will be more effective if you not just drink the water but you eat the barley grains itself.. but sadly, Thambee has been drinking quite a lot of barley water and yet he is as bloated as Doraemon!!! hmmmph, i guess maybe many kopitiams are actually not selling the real barley but they make the drinks from cordial or powder bought from their suppliers!!! holy g~~

  9. with that RM2.20, we can cooked one big pot of barley and i think the kopitiam and cafe are making very handsome profit from the barley drinks they are selling.. RM1.50 and about RM4 in cafes, how many folds the cost huh?? Anay must cook barley water for Thambee and deliver them by hand so that Thambee can enjoy the goodness of Anay's miracle barley water that can even heal your dad's edema.. and Thambee is very sure the same thing would happen to Thambee's "bodily" edema too!!!

  12. We do sell that type of barley too. It is not too cooling so infant and elderly people can take it. But if people should experience infected urinary bladder, it's very suitable to treat this condition by just drinking the whole lot of the barley drinks without sugar.

  13. I drink both the big and small barley water too. Thanks for sharing with us about their benefits. Hope it will help your father.

  14. Yes, barley helps in water retention, good for our bladder also.

  15. Yup, I have heard of the superpowers of barley too, thanks to my mom!

I think this is the right approach. Usually western medicine will be stumped in terms of recovery and "tuning" of the body, they only know how to remove symptoms, better to go the Chinese way for nourishment.

  16. Oh news to me.. barley can cure edema. Used to add a handful of barley into rice cooker with the rice. That reminds me to tell mango to continue to do so. Learned this from the Koreans.

  20. Interesting! I've seen a lot of pearl barley (shaped like a perfect sphere) lately too, it's been very popular nowadays.

They even use it to make barley risotto! It's become a heath food fad even in the US and Australia. :)

  23. Somehow I don't like barley but I know it's good especially for urinary infections. That's what I heard and I remember drinking it when I encountered pain during pee pee. My wifey also boiled some when my kid having this problem too, which I guess its lack of water in the body la. Kids usually drink very little water.
Barley also contains lots of fibre if you eat it.
