Sugamo Shopping Haven

This place is also known as The Harajuku Of The Old Ladies!
My wifey absolutely loved this place with the highest ranking.
Hear me?? Top most favourite ranking place visited by her
in Tokyo!

01. This 800 meter long Jizo Dori shopping street
has so many Red Underwear shops
which is their signature products.

02. The whole area is very popular with the older generations
who are fondly called Obasang & Ojisang!
It means Old Aunties & Old Uncles.

 03. I really lost count on the number of red underwear shops!
Muahahaha

  04. The Obasangs and Ojisangs were busy fussing away
at all the stuffs like tonics, supplements, fruits, warm clothings
 walking sticks and rocking chairs!
Suddenly I missed my 4 Grandmothers.

05. Voila! These signature red underwears,
which comes in a variety of styles
and is thought to bring abundance luck to the wearer.

 06. My wifey insisted many times that I should buy one
red underwear too!!

 07. I was amused by the activities and shoppers there.
I foresee that I would retire someday and join ranks
in the slow paced lifestyle.

 08. The man played the top many times to attract the
Obasangs. I had no idea what was that shop trading inside.

 09. She found a black sesame ice cream.
That is her all time favourite.

 10. I took a good look at the red underwear and picked nothing!
Do I need a red underwear??

 11. I spotted many lanterns and that must be a temple.

12. This Koganji Temple is halfway down the
shopping street. This neat small temple is home to the highly
popular Togenuki Jizo deity.

 13. Too much red underwears seen.
So I washed my eyes & mouth!

 14. This shrine has the popular Jizo Bodhisattva
and is thought to help heal ailments. No wonder many
obasangs and ojisangs frequent this place
for blessings!

 15. After their prayers, they would proceed outside to bathe
the statue of Kannon Bodhisattva.

16. It was interesting to see the chatty oldies sitting in a circle
staring at the pretty flowers for many hours.

 17. I promptly sat there too and stared at the flowers.

 18. It was getting late and very cold.
So we went inside a chic cafe to get coffee.

 19. We sat outside the cafe and wrote all our postcards.
Oh boy, it was chilly and my fingers were frozen.

 20. I quickly mailed all the postcards from this post office.
Next postcards will probably arrive from Yogjakarta.

    4. What muscles flexing dei? Me so fat liao.

Yeah the shopping street was an eye opener, no stress, no rush, happy-slow-lucky people and self-reflects for my old age.

I didn't buy any red undies cos no celebrate CNY as the mourning period is yet to end.

Yeah I am grandma, so what? You called me once and again now. Phiak your head. When you get old, you will stare at flowers too.

The post box was cute, so I had to act cute with tongue sticking out.

Even the one beside Nakamise-dori is nice and feel very different from the touristy feel of Nakamise. :)

I really love the shotengais in Japan. I have not been to this Nakamise-dori.

    2. Oit! Nakamise-dori is the shopping street you visited when you go to Asakusa dei. It's right behind that Thunder Gate. Muahaha

  5. I am now wondering how you would look wearing a red underwear and then I dismissed that thought immediately. It must be very difficult to find one since all of them are red. I am also fascinated by the shrine and in my next trip to Japan, will probably go there for blessings. But for now, gotta find a red underwear to wear this new year for luck, much cheaper!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the theory of red underwear bringing luck should not be dismissed as many older folks seem to know many things. Japan is all about shrines, ramen and onsens only. That is the bliss that draws the millions of tourists.

    1. Oh yes, I love to play mahjong and am expert since young.
No CNY until 2017 as my mourning period ends after CNY 2016.

    1. Tokyo is too big and I barely saw 10% of their famous attractions. So I won't expect you to know this isolated place where they don't sell Prada or LV. It was a good therapy for me to walk through and think of my coming old age! Wakakakaka

  21. Dear Anay, when I first read this post, I thought that I have been to this place at Harajuku, but I didn't see read underwear shops. So, I think we went to another shopping street at Harajuku and we did not go to Sugamo.

I felt regret for not visiting Sugamo, otherwise I would bought a dozen of red underwear back. I would give to all my friends a red underwear, sot that they can wear on this coming CNY. Everyone will sure ong, huat and heng ah!

    1. I hope you had fun at the real Harajuku. This Sugamo is not for you yet, go there in 2026 when you are riped and sagged. Muahahaha

I am amused that ladies always could buy anything including undies as gifts. Why men cannot do that?? Tsk!

  24. Red underwear! How unusual!

I've had red underwear before (bought it as a Chinese New Year thing), it was one of my favorite pairs, didn't know Japan had a street dedicated to it.

It looks like a lot of fun! I see a banner advertising some sort of pastry (cake?) in the picture where your wife is eating black sesame ice cream, I'll love to go in and try new stuff in Japan. :)
