When we google search for Okonomiyaki, it would show
that this famous omelette or pancake is associated with
the areas of Kansai or Hiroshima in Japan.
The word okonomi means "what you like" or "what you want"
while the word yaki means "grilled" or "cooked"
1. We found a famous restaurant nearby the Hotel Hokke Club
where we stayed. We just walked a few blocks away.
You can see all the memorabilia of the famous
baseball teams of Japan with the actual photos
of the players dining there.
2. It is a family run business where the son helped to
cook our orders. They were so polite, warm and friendly!
cook our orders. They were so polite, warm and friendly!
3. The matriarch of the family also did her finest roles
to prepare the precise portion of ingredients. It looks easy
to make the Okonomiyaki but I have no interest to cook.
I just love to eat and be served.
4. This was the best Okonomiyaki I have ever eaten in my life.
Thanks to my wife who has very good knowledge for famous food
and places to hang out in overseas.
6. We sapu and cleaned the plates in 10 minutes.

Same to you, I always interested to eat but not interested to cook, actually for me, it applies to any food, please don't ask me to cook, that's why I would rather eat whatever is being prepared. XD
ReplyDeleteI could see that you have lots of patience for art and crafts. You should learn to cook so that you can feed your own family in future.
DeleteOkonomiyaki... I like.
ReplyDeleteOkonomiyaki... I love!
DeleteHiroshima okomiyaki is very huge compare to Osaka or Kansai as you mentioned. I made before Osake Okonomiyaki but not Hiroshima.
ReplyDeleteI really had no idea of the sizes until you shared. Your knowledge about Japanese food is very good.
DeleteKansai one I not sure.
ReplyDeleteOsaka okonomiyaki is all mix in a batter and pan fry. Usually will have seafood like baby octopus chunks inside.
The one with so many "liu" ingredients is Hiroshima style. Firstly they will spread a circle of the batter like making crepes. Then they will put a large amount of shredded cabbage. Then they will let it pan fry or grill for a while and flip to another side. I don't have that skill to flip it over. Then top with ramen and eggs... Very filling right?
You are spot on. I stood there to watch the guy cook and my eyes went wide to see so much ingredients thrown inside including the baby octopus!!!. I thought he simply hentam to clear his kitchen bowls as we were the last customer. So this is really Hiroshima style la.
DeleteHey, there is nothing you cannot bake or cook! Just buy the flat ladle like cement scrapper to press and toss over the flat pan. After cooking this Taiping Okonomiyaki, please invite us over.
Oh yes, he topped it with ramen and eggs! Burps! i walked back to hotel to sleep as I was too full and filled like balloon.
DeleteBut hor I need to invest another flat grill pan leh. Anyway will stay back to Osaka style easy.
DeleteI thought you can use that common one handle non-stick flat pan to make this dish. It is so tasty and I am drooling as I type now. I must google where to find okonomiyaki in KL.
DeleteOkonomiyaki is something I have yet to eat. How could I miss this? Another one is ramen. Aiyo, this post makes me want to go find Okonomiyaki and eat to my heart's content!
ReplyDeleteIt is so hard to believe that you have never tried this okonomiyaki. I am sure you could make better ones from your left overs.
DeleteMe is not very keen to cook, that why most of the time, i eat outside...
ReplyDeleteWhen you can cook well with tasty smells, your new husband will show up at your kitchen windows! Muahahaha
DeleteI don't think I have ever seen prawns on top of Okonomiyaki. Must be the owner made a special one for you!
ReplyDeleteHey, the Hiroshima styled okonomiyaki is the best in Japan as they would add in big prawns and octopus too. Other cities make petite ones.
DeleteThumbs UP to your wifey! So blessed you are to have good food without doing your homework.. hahahaa...
ReplyDeleteShe is definitely smarter than me. I do not even have a master degrees. LOL
Delete1. Oh...this must be a baseball fan! They really decor the place with all the baseballs pixs and souvenirs, if I didn't see wrongly. hahaha
ReplyDelete2. Okonomiyaki , first time I heard about it and it's a family business. How nice !!
3. Seems you guys really having a good time with the food. OK la, who cares , just eat and eat!
You should go there when you visit Japan someday. Please jot down in the back page of your passport now.
Delete4. wow...that was a nice place of errr..what .... Okonomiyaki ? Well, this is really my first time seeing these stuffs. Maybe I had too much ramen and sushi and don't bother about the rest. It really looks good!! Kudos to your wife!
ReplyDelete5. And you guys had different plates. How nice , can share share! So, how it taste ah ? OK la, I really jakun !
6. hahahah.... no need to clean the plates! Must be damn tasty!
DeleteYeah la, you damn jakun la. Next time please look for okonomiyaki in the Japanese menus! Forget about the sashimi and sushi which you have eaten too much worms. Bwahahaha
DeleteSekali cuba, mahu lagi and lick the plates dry.
Must be very tasty! It looks huge. Did you eat the one sold at Issen-Yoshoku, a popular eatery that specialises in Kyoto-style okonomiyaki around Gion, Kyoto? They have lots of artwork hanging on the wall which I find isn't quite related to food, hahaha. Next time you go to Kyoto, you must eat there if you haven't already done so.
ReplyDeleteIt looked huge and scary but inside was hollow enough to allow me to finish. I must try this Gion - Kyoto style of okonomiyaki when I ever visit there again. Every city has their own cooking styles.
DeleteI was wondering what is okonomiyaki when I saw the title in my blogroll, and glad you explained it at the beginning of your sentence, whoa, you know what readers (or only me?) are thinking wor !! Eh, you didn't mention what's inside the pancakes, you just showed pictures of the plates sapu-ed clean.. But from the picture, I see cabbage, egg, shrimps.. Sure delicious to the max, the plates look like you licked them leh towards the end..
ReplyDeleteI am such a lousy food blogger that I could even forget to write the details and ingredients inside. I must be more alert like Phong Hong when comes to food blogs. I only recalled they had many cut pieces of vegetables, meat and eggs! It is so yummy la. Tell your hubby to pamper you with some okonomiyaki this weekend.
Deleteneedless to say, it must be very tasty..I am so jealous when I heard my BIL family is going to visit Japan..Hmm wonder when is my turn to visit Japan.
ReplyDeleteLife is short and time flies so fast. Start booking your flights now for Japan in 2017 where you can surely get cheap fares and hotels. You will love Japan!
DeleteHeard of this but haven't taste it yet..... hopefully soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
I am sure your talented daughter can make this okonomiyaki by just looking at the simple recipe instructions.
DeleteThat sure look delicious Anay. :)
ReplyDeleteYes! This okonomiyaki is very sedap & bagus.
Deletevery delicious indeed!! Thambee has only eaten the very basic okonomiyaki because he always believe the most basic and the most original ones would be the first most authentic thing to try out.. Anay and Letchumi had one with prawns and egg, and the other one?? teriyaki chicken?? so clever of Letchumi to be able to make good research of nice good and place to go, albeit being such a busy woman..
ReplyDeleteI am also curious to try the basic okonomiyaki as I could not remember how they tasted. The one was teriyaki ayam! Thambee so pandai like that slumdog millionaire!
DeleteOh yes, my Letchumy sure does all the googling and itinerary planning for me before we go on trips. Otherwise I might end up walking like headless chicken.
Hi! Looks very delicious!
ReplyDeleteYes the original okonomiyaki in Japan is more delicious than what we ate here in my country.
DeleteHi! Looks very delicious!

DeleteSame as Chris, I only know ramen and sushi for Japanese Food, first time heard of Okonomiyaki
ReplyDeleteThe ambience of the restaurant must be very warm and inviting
It seems like not many people have heard of this okonomiyaki after I have posted this in my blog. I am glad that I shared this famous dish which is little know. I think the world knows their sashimi, sushi and ramen too well.
DeleteThe restaurant looked like a family kitchen to be precise.
I never see a okonomiyaki topped with prawns! The portion looks big & I believe it can be shared among 2 eaters but 2 got yourselves one each, so greedy, haha!
ReplyDeleteThis okonomiyaki is Hiroshima styled that's why so huge with prawns! I thought I could not finish alone but it was loose and hollow inside.
DeleteBTW, I can't find any restaurant serve good Okonomikayi here at M'sia, or does it any restaurant serve it? =.="
ReplyDeleteThere are many okonomiyaki restaurants in Klang Valley esp the upscale areas like Bangsar and Sri Hartamas. Just google okonomiyaki in KL. Bingo!
Deletewow, looks so delicious!
ReplyDeleteYes. Sedap & bagus!
DeleteI rarely eat this. P.S.: The son looks cute.
ReplyDeleteHey your naughty eyes. You like skinny guys?
DeleteYou said that's the best Okonomiyaki you have ever eaten, I totally agree! Cause by looking at it already made me drool!!
ReplyDeleteYes. It was the best because the Hiroshima okonomiyaki has the most ingredients inside to please anyone. Must try yeah...!
DeleteSo clean, the plates I mean. And I laughed when you mentioned your goal is to eat and be served. Thanks to your wife for all that food knowledge or you'll be left wandering around for great food.
ReplyDeleteOkonomiyaki looks very delicious. It is a type of pancake or omelette. I like any type of pancake and omelette actually. Most Japanese foods are nice, I reckon.
ReplyDeleteHahha...I bet is very delicious by looking at the plate. I personaly not a huge fan of okonomiyaki, probably have not eaten a very good one.
ReplyDeleteWow! Looks so delicious!!
