Man's Best Friend

I found my old childhood photo in my blog archives recently. It was taken at my grandfather's home in Thailand which is almost 2 acres big. He kept several dogs and 4 servants to manage the place. When intruders entered at night, the dogs would bark non stop to wake my late grandfather up. He would just pick up the rifle and shoot at the direction. The loud gunshot bang would send the robbers away! The dogs went back to sleep.

The photo of my brother, cousin and myself. Can you recognize me?
I was about 9 years old.

Today I have so much memories of my late father and all the dogs in Penang. I was a very small kid then and got chased by so many dogs. I got bitten by an Alsatian, Doberman, Dalmatian, Bull Dog, Shaggy Dog and so many pariah dogs! Each time I got bitten, I would go home crying to my father who would ask me to show him the dogs in the neighbourhood. He was worried and always took me to hospital for rabies injections!! My wife thinks I am still very crazy at times and I blamed these infected crazy dogs.

I still love all the dogs very much as they are fun and loyal for your attention. I also love cats as they are quiet and mind their own business always. I just do not wish to keep them as pets because I would cry many buckets when they die. Do the dogs bite you too??

  2. I have an anecdote to tell. I visited my friend one evening and left very late. The couple graciously let me borrow one of their bikes as the distance was not that far. So in the middle of the night, I was cycling like mad as hundreds, literally, of soi dogs were barking and chasing me. I had never been in utter horror, thinking that I might get bitten. Thank goodness they actually stopped chasing when I was almost home. Lesson learned: take a cab!

Nice to see your beginnings and very obvious, I was able to pinpoint where you were in that photo. Looking good!

    1. Oh yes, I was also being chased when I was riding bicycles and motorbikes. These days I would start making cat's purr and make them bark non stop until the owners woke up in the middle of the night. Not my fault eh..... 55555

  3. I am terrified of stray dogs and am always wary of them. But domesticated and friendly ones, I am OK. I used to have a pet dog which I loved very dearly and when she died, my heart broke into a thousand pieces and I cried buckets. Since then, I vowed not to have any pets.

Are to the one on the right?

  4. Staying at your late grandfather's place must be one of the greatest memories of yours! I had a terrier before, fiery little thing he was, barking at almost anything, by-passers, cars, baby strollers, bikes, rubbish bins etc etc. Thanks for sharing the picture - you haven't changed - looking good!

    1. Yes I have lots of dull and fond memories of my grandfather's house which was nearby the biggest lake in Thailand. I thought it was an ocean until I went to school and saw the map that it was a lake!

Your terrier must be barking because it was happy! Those nasty ones only bite others.

  5. I remember I got chased by dog when I was really young, maybe during primary school and I didn't get bite by the dog but I scared of dog very much later on. Don't know why when I grew up, I don't scared of them anymore and always prefer dog than cat, haha!

  9. My mother told me I was chased and bitten by a dog when I was a small girl but strangely I was never of dogs all these years (not even barking dogs), I love them instead, I also love cats, cats are very cuddly.

Same reason as yours, I would not want to keep a cat or dog as pet as I am afraid I would cry many days if they died because they have a shorter life span than humans

I guess you are the one on the far right, am I right?

  15. Why do the bogs bite you all the time? You must be very tasty...haha! XD I'm terrified of big dogs and stray dogs but love small dogs. When I take a stroll around my neighbourhood and see a dog in front of me, I will "gostan balik". They say the key is to not look them in the eye...no touch, no talk, no eye contact (advice from Cesar Millan). I have a pet cat (and I agree, they're much quieter than dogs as pets) that I now regret saving from my roof top seeing that I may cry buckets when he dies! T_T

    1. My father also teased me that I must be tasty beef or smelled like cats to attract them. Last time I also gostan balik but the dogs still chased me!!! These days I have overcome the fear and stare at them before provoking them Ggrrrrrr to bark louder!

Get ready to have a spare cat now before the other dies. The pain would be lesser and just cry half bucket!! Muahahaha

  18. No dogs have bitten me, but our pet dog scratched me a bit to see blood on my toe when playing around when she was less than a year old. My uncle had grown some dogs and most of them are stray ones except a Doberman which was bought to guard his garage at night. One dog named Mani (a stray dog) was very attached to our family and we never saw a dog alike that after it passed away.

Liked you childhood photo and I am sure it was you in specs :) The happy old days will never return and disappear ever from memory
