Unpleasant Homecoming

My sister and her hubby are finally back home from United Kingdom. They had a very great and glorious time visiting all their friends and the famous landmarks from London to Thames, Reading and Middlesex & everywhere! They went on big shopping and eating spree as the weather was very beautiful with no rain but sunshine which was a rare treat. Husband & wife updated their Facebook with scenic photos almost every hour like college kids. Their precious daughter's graduation was the happiest joy and pride for them on the final leg of their trip. She majored in Chemistry just like my father who specialised in liquids. My father was sent to study in Sunderland, England under the Colombo Plan which offered scholarships to the top students.

So my "housesitting" job came to an end after the 2 cats got used to me as their new Master of The House. On Saturday night, we went over to feed the cats for the last time and watered their hanging gardens on the balcony. My wife was hungry and decided to cook Maggi Mee before we adjourned to a proper dinner & Spiderman movies. She took the egg out from the fridge and realised the egg was so warm!! Dang! The whole big fridge had died. Oh My God! The stench and smell of morgue flowed out and filled the whole kitchen sending the 2 cats to flee to the balcony for fresh air.

Eewww! I have removed half the bottom rack & look at the almost
empty freezer with all the rotten meat and bloody water. Horrors!
The Maggots were all alive and dancing happily in the
pools of blood while singing
"We Are The World".

I had to remove so many packets of the decayed salmon slices,
bacons, beef chunks, mutton, dory fishes and gallons of mixed blood!
The smell was the most horrible Rigor Mortis stench and stained
all my beautiful fingers. I texted my sister at London'd Heathrow
to notify her on the death of her +2 year old Hitachi fridge.
That night I had a frightful nightmare in my sleep that
those toxic blood had penetrated my skin into my body.
I woke up in cold sweat and regretted for not using a
pair of rubber gloves. I didn't see any gloves anyway.

Look at the lovely gifts we received from my sister and hubby
from all their shopping & strolling around Camden, Thames
and St James Park.. My eyes went very wide to see
"Rolling Stones" tee shirt and shorts for me! LOLOL.
She is a big fan of Rolling Stones but not me!
We often received dozens of chocolates from all
her overseas travels. This time we received "Crumpets" which
is something new & alien to me. Has anyone ever
eaten Crumpets?

When they finally landed at Kuala Lumpur and arrived
home to see their fridge in comatose mode, they
read shocking news that Camden is on FIRE!!
They just had their last meal there.

Besides Soho and Covent Garden, this place at Camden Town
is the most popular rendezvous hub in North West London
for both locals and tourists to Eat, Drink, Shop & Dance!
There are over 1000 shops here & now the Camden Market
is razed down to ashes! I will always remember
our shorts and tee shirts for a long time.

Many thanks for all the kind comments at the post

  1. Ewwww ..indeed. Am totally laughing at your expression..so funny! I can imagine, it happened to me once. I had to clean out the fridge. Only that my fridge didn't die. We switched the electric supply off because we were going for away for a long holiday..totally forgot about the fridge..lol! ^.^

How nice of your sister to get you souvenirs. Lovely stuff.

    1. I also had one bad experience when I was away to Japan for a week. The lightning struck my area and tripped off the electricity supply. It took me almost 1 month to get rid of the foul odour. Once bitten twice shy. We have never left any more meat or milk inside the fridge again.

    2. Same here. I try to clear everything up before I leave for a holiday. The maggots are hard to forget.

    1. Oh yes I almost had to wash my fingers with clorox as the awful stench stuck onto my 10 fingers until next morning.

That would be nice if they were eating at Camden and fire broke out. I am sure they would selfie and post 100 photos to their Facebook. Muahahahaha

  3. Oh my goodness! I can imagine the stench! Last time the whole fridge stank because of some raw meat left at the bottom of the fridge... imagine just a little.. and yours full of meat.. can faint! hahahaa....

    1. Yeah you could imagine how bad my experience to smell so many types of rotten meat being huddled together. I think the fridge would have exploded if I used a match stick to light fire. Wakakaka

That morning I had smelled the hints of the stench and thought the cats had foul B.O.

  5. Oh dear, how come the Hitachi fridge can die so very young? I did not know about the Camden Town fire. So sad that I did not visit there when I was in UK for almost 4 years although I did visit Convent Garden. Good that you have your souvenirs from there for remembrance. I have eaten crumpets many times for breakfast when I was living there. Just toast them and put butter on them when they are still warm. Really tasty! I even mentioned crumpets in my post here: http://muntalksfood.blogspot.my/2015/06/coconut-lempeng.html

    because I miss them.

Do you like the taste of the crumpets?

    1. We are all equally puzzled that the almost brand new fridge which has a hi-tech design and features could kaput like that. It still had lights on when opened the doors except the air cond which is dead.

It was so nice that you had the chance to live in UK for several years. Those have been good memories for you. My sister and hubby lived there much longer when the daughter was still small. They hated the damp weather so much but now the favourable weather patterns might have triggered their thoughts. I hope that they would move back so that I could visit them always!

They love to eat crumpets like you and bought many packets back. I plan to eat them tomorrow morning after seeing your lempeng blog post. Now I know that we could buy from tesco if I like them.
It was nice to see all those faces of SK, Princess Ribbon and RG again in that post. They are like lost in history now. LOL

  6. Adoi! I cannot imagine the horror. It happened to my parents once. They were away over here when the circuit breaker at their home in Terengganu tripped. So dad was quite smart. He switched on the electricity back and let everything freeze back before throwing the food out. Less mess. I really pity you!

Whoah, you sis and hubby managed to avoid the Camden fire.

    1. I hope all my readers will remember to empty and free their refrigerators of meat and milk when they go on short or long trips. I think even one day without electricity would bring the maggots dancing to life!!

  7. Aiyoh, you didn't do your house sitting job well. You were supposed to raid her fridge and eat everything in there. Now look what happen, you have a mess to clean up! :D

Btw, your healthy eating must be working...keep it up :) You look thinner than the two profile pictures you have on your blog....hehe! ;)

    1. I could not bring myself to sleepover for 2 whole weeks as it was quite inconvenient when both of us are working full time. If we are on vacations, it is another story and treat it like AirBnB.

I didn't realise that my face looked slimmer than the profiles. Your eyes and radar are sharp & good. My weight is still the same and could that be the perfect angle that made me slimmest?? HaHaHa!
I will ask my wife to take a good look at me.

  9. gosh, what an unpleasant surprise from the kitchen! so u and ur wife tak jadi having dinner & movie coz both of u busy cleaning the fridge? I wouldn't stuff so many food in the fridge before long vacation. Coz sometimes the electricity tripped (of storm) and the fridge may go powerless for days. Luckily u noticed this before they comes home, otherwise they would have a big faint!

    1. We only cleared one shelf that contained all the meat and blood! The horrible stench had to go first and we dashed to the movies on time. I ordered the burger which delivered into the cinema on time.

Even one day without electricity would create the maggots and stench. Now they are having headache as the repairmen are nit free and they have to wait for 3 days! Wow!

    1. Exactly and they are making them wait for 3 days!! All repairmen are not free and that is bad after sales service. Maybe they have only one repairman!

    2. Oh no what a shock for you and wife. I understand what you meant by the smell on your hands because I picked up my stray cat from the drain last weekend and the stench and the maggots seems to last forever!
Used to bring back crumpets from Melbourne too. Love them warm with honey and butter.
Your sister really love you with so many presents.. enjoy!

    1. Hey I think that's how they make rice wine by soaking the fermented rice in water. The smell could be really bad but rice wine is prized and tastes good.

It was not easy to stay over for too long as both of us work full time and lots of relevant stuffs are at home. If it is a vacation overseas, that's easier.

  23. Oh, my…! It’s not a matter of laugh, but anyway you made me laugh by your writing. I haven’t had such an experience, but my washing machine once flooded while I was away for shopping a few hours. It was quite devastating, but home insurance could cover the fee for the damages. Regarding the refrigerator, I’ll keep it mind not to leave meat, fish, and egg when going on holiday.

Regarding your question, I don’t have a plan of visiting Malaysia so far, but if I have a chance, I’ll tell you for sure. I’d like to see you again both on this blog and mine in September. Have happy summer ahead. Also happy landing when you travel overseas.
