(Updated) Computational Thinking @ Taman Desa

Our country was supposed to roll out Computational Thinking skills and curriculum across all the schools and universities a few years ago. Due to the multiple changes in the political scene, everything had to be restarted, resubmitted and discussed all over again. This delay badly hurts the educational system and slows down the progress. We are always behind everyone else. We are often famous for wrong reasons too!

Since my wife is the only person who holds the Master Trainer's Gold Award certificate for Computational Thinking Skills outside United States, I fully support her humble ambitions to benefit the future generations. Money is not most important factor here, though useful for survival and I embarked into plans within my small way in using my foresight and advertising background.

We set up the first centre for Computational Thinking in the middle of 2019. It was just before the start of the Covid's pandemic that affected the whole world. We had a slow start but I was surprised to see the business flourish in all unexpected directions. My wife has been engaged by 3 big establishments for her services with long term contracts. I am proud of her success and hard work. We also have many students who come from faraway places like Putra Heights, Kota Kemuning, Old Klang Road, 9 Mile Jalan Cheras, Ara Damansara and others. To me, that's really very far and their effort to travel is remarkable. That's because their parents are all well learned and farsighted people who knew how important Computational Thinking is for the present and future generations. All the big offices in US like Microsoft, Google, Yale, Harvard, & Carnegie Mellon Universities and many others are using Computational Thinking skills. The parents would willingly drive across so many paying tolls and mileage, just to give the best to their children. For this I am truly grateful for their confidence. Now it is not a problem for them to drive so far and pay for both ways multiple tolls and petrol, but once they reach our area, the nightmare starts! There is hardly any parking space in this busy area even on Sundays. It has been a nagging problem for 2 years now. Enough I said to myself.

I decided that the best location which meets all of them halfway is definitely Taman Desa which is a matured neighbourhood with ample parking space. I have lived here before and still keeps my rented condo, therefore every street there is like the back of my palm.

I met up with my property agent friend who introduced me a very ideal and suitable place. We have paid the deposits and are waiting to sign the contract. I have designed and planned for the layout before meeting the renovation team soon. My wife looked pleased and raised her eyebrows to see my sketches that included beautiful lighted pantry bar decked with plants and high stools inside the classroom corner for the students or participants. Everyone loves to be pampered, why not?

    1. There is already another affiliated centre at Setia Alam.

    3. I am only looking at a bigger picture beyond this certification process. My wife taught Computational Thinking in overseas ahead before our MOE showed interests. It was being mentioned before in my posts that she often taught in Manila, Jakarta, Taipei & etc. Franchise fees? You always asked funny questions in blogs.

    4. I think I may have not asked very clearly. I mean will you all be thinking about charging other people who are interested to open a computational center that is affiliated to yours and learning how to teach from your wife or from her courses? I mean your wife doesn't conduct all the classes in both her current centers herself, right? She does the teach the trainer courses and give the trainers that she trained accreditation or certification to conduct the courses as employed by her or by you both, right? I did read your previous post but maybe I need to read it again.

    5. I don't mean that you both need to pay franchise fees to anyone. To clarify. I mean do u plan to charge people franchise fees if they want to open branches of your center. People pay you franchise fees. No the other way round.

    6. No worries. I read and understood your question clearly. You asked me "How much is your franchise fees?" This is funny for me to reply in this comments space.
I have bigger plans than franchise business which will not reach enough audience. One university in China besides UTAR has expressed interest to sign MOU when the time is right. This is just the beginning. I cannot reveal too much yeah.

    7. Thanks for replying. I understand now. All the best and may you reach as many people as you both can with this computational thinking because it is useful for everyone to learn it! Jia You! Gambatte! 💪👍

  2. Wow your business is flourishing indeed. :)

Yes parents who educated would know what is best for their little ones.

    1. Education is always better than Gold. The parents raise the children well with good education and the papers would be carried by the kids forever. Money and properties don't last.

  3. Parking is also a perpetual problem in my office area. And yes, even on Sundays too. It's good to know that your wife's Computational Thinking Center is doing very well and students from far and wide come to gain the knowledge. It's a good move to choose a more convenient location and it will be a relief to the poor parents who have to contend with the commute and parking issues. I have seen parents double parking while waiting for their kids at the tuition centers in Damansara Uptown.

    1. If the parents could double park at least, they would be happy but there is no spot for double parking too. TTDI has bad town planning issues by the developer. They thought the customers would walk from home but time has changed la. Customers and business operators come from other areas in lorry loads.

Uptown is still good as SHC developer is very thoughtful to design Starling to have plenty of parking floors to solve the problem area's issues. You can see that the parking lot entrances face several directions. I was fortunate to sit inside the last consultant's meeting with SHC team and saw their master plan before Starling was opened. I really saluted them for being a thoughtful developer which is envied by other developers after seeing their success in building 1-U. You live and work in a good place. So are your 2 cats, living in good havens.

  4. Looks like this 'business' of yours is going places. I'm very happy for the both of you...especially you now that you can be your own boss (no more stress of working for old boss who doesn't pay you salary for months!). I can see you having your hands full managing a few centres in the foreseeable future, taukeh TM...ka-ching! ;) No more time to sell properties to the alive...or dead...wakakakaka! :D

Taman Desa is a good choice seeing that there's plenty of good and very affordable food in the area for the parents to while their time away while waiting for their children....that counts too, right? Lol. Oh, there's plenty of parking too (when I come here to eat, I like that I don't have to go searching for a parking space).

    1. I agree that Taman Desa is a better area with plenty of affordable food cafes and restaurants. Faber developer is smarter in terms of town planning.

I am just a Taugeh in setting up these centers as I don't get involved with the operations or even the accounts. So I still have to continue selling properties to the alive and dead ones. Honestly I prefer the dead ones for many reasons. They won't bargain because they already saved a lot $$$ for being early birds.

  6. may ur business flourish with many more centers to open....i m still thinking on what is this Computational Thinking about (I didn't read your old post, or might have forgotten about it)...Does it apply to working adults?

    1. Thank you for your kind wishes. You can read up a lot about the importance of Computational Thinking. It originated from Carnegie Mellon University which has been ranked the top Computer Science in the world. Plenty of brainy students from China have enrolled and graduated from there. Now the US/China tension might permanently close the admissions forever. Sad, right? I have big plans.

All the many participants my wife had taught in Manila, Jakarta, Taipei and others are adults like lecturers and professors too.

  7. All the best to your business, TM. It looks promising with the interest expressed by the MOE. I googled for the term computational thinking and wow I am impressed. Don't mind I ask, how different are they from computer programming?

    1. Many thanks for your kind wishes. The MOE puts top priority into this Computational Thinking Skills.

Computer programming is just a subject or course whereas the CT is to develop the thinking skills for all subjects. In our countries, you and I studied text books where we were forced to memorize everything whether we understood or not. In US, their education is different as the students are taught to use thinking skills to explore and understand everything. That's why they produced world class graduates, top researchers, inventors and other geniuses.

    1. Thank you Jeevan. We only live once and will not bring anything along when we depart. It would be good if we could help to change the education standards and bring them to another level without thinking of profit and gains only. Education is always better than Gold.
