How To Peel Mangosteen

I have been eating the delicious Mangosteen fruits all my life. It is nutritious and power packed with rich nutrients like different vitamins. My Thai mother taught me how to use a small knife to cut them open nicely to serve guests. This is a common practice in Thailand where the folks are creative in fruit carving as they often have beautiful fruits and food presentation as offerings to the Gods, Temples and distinguished guests.

It is now the Tropical Fruits Season in Malaysia and I have been eating durians, rambutans and mangosteens to my heart's content. I saw the supermarket selling mangoesteen and bought some home.

I realized that all my friends and relatives here would just use both their palms to press or squash open the fruit to eat. Sometimes the whole pulp would be messed up with juice squirting out. I would take a small knife to cut lightly in a circle to open up.

Tada! It looks better and neat to serve our guests with a fork.

Meanwhile, I have been snacking since last year when the MCO started. I have eaten so much junk food and narrowed down to just sunflower seeds lately. It is more addictive, healthier and not fattening! I have been buying Char Cheer's brand with Cream Flavour which is the top selling brand that has always been snapped up. Finally I decided to track down online and found only Shoppee sells them! So my big package arrived!

Look at my 10 huge packets of Sunflower seeds! Yums! I have lost a total of 18 kgs since the MCO started in early 2020.

  1. So brilliant! So nicely cut! Ya, I saw mangosteens selling at my neighborhood durian's stall too.

I think I will slim down during the lockdown too as that day I was too lazy to dabao food home to eat so I just grabbed some fish balls and curry puffs to eat, no proper meal.

    1. I think most people have lost weight due to loss of income! That's me for sure. Hahhaha. The MCO and no dine-in means no weddings or birthday parties where I often over ate more than I should. The pandemic is so suffering and made me lost all my appetite to eat sometimes. I started eating curry puffs and pies too!!

    1. No thanks to Malaysia's lockdown. The government here is making lives miserable. You sound like you do not live in Malaysia, right? I need to put back some weight as everyone says I look like skeleton.

  3. I also eat with a fork. Aiyoh, so much kuaci. If I eat a lot of that, I get thirsty, and my mouth dry.

    1. I think you can easily buy mangosteen, durians and rambutans at the Chinatowns in US esp in Washington DC near the Massachusetts Avenue. Enjoy with Mister!

  5. I'll use your method if I want to take some nice photos of the mangosteens,or else I'll just open with the pressing method, LOL
I tried the sunflower seeds that you shared (maybe different brand) but found it quite salty due to the flavouring, so I'll buy those charged by weight which is less flavouring.

    1. I look forward to see your good photography skills again. The best shoot would be outdoors with ample lighting.

Cha Cheer Sunflower seeds are the top selling brands at Jaya Grocer and Hero Market. The "Cream" flavour is always snapped within 2 days. That's why I had to order online. Now Shoppee also sold out.

  7. I love mangosteen to death! They're two of my most favourite fruits, the other being mango (minus the steen...lol). I use the press & squash method too. And sometimes when the mangosteen is too hard, I even put it in between my knees and use my knee/leg power to squash them...hah..hah! :D It didn't occur to me to cut it open with a knife (well, thanks to you, now I know!). Yours are certainly more presentable to serve to guests.

You've been snacking since MCO started last year (and only narrowed down to sunflower seeds recently) but can still lose 18kg! Not fair...jealous-nya!! :D :D How did that happen? Did you eat less overall or you increased your exercise regimen since there's nothing much to do during the lockdowns?

    1. Wah! I have a comrade in Mangosteen and Mangoes. Seriously I would buy different mangoes whole year to eat. Mangosteens make my mood and appetite very happy. When I buy them, I must press one by one to make sure they are not stones or rocks which a parang could not even chop. Always ended in the dustbin and I cannot blame the seller for that.

Losing weight was unplanned at all. I think I have been overeating all my life and was overweight until my gym's PT advised me to workout harder which I didn't. The gym's closure actually made all the muscles disappear until weight dropped from the skies. Then the government made me loose more appetite as no dine-in at restaurants. That's my open secret!

  8. this kuaci is said to be cancer-causing, so you might want to consider cutting down the amount.....

    1. I believe in karma getting cancer more than what we eat. Perhaps you need to look back all the unhealthy food you have been eating too.

  10. You know I super LOVE mangosteens! I am not a fan of fruits but mangosteens I cannot resist. I have always opened them by squeezing and have to be careful not to kena the juice on my shirt. My late grandpa used to peel all the mangosteens and keep the flesh in a container in the fridge. I used to scoop it with a spoon and eat hee..hee.. Aiyo I must go and look for these fruits. I really miss them!
