Happy Winter Solstice

Today marks the auspicious and shortest day of Winter in the Northern Hemisphere. I have copied and shared below, the history of this festival.

The Dongzhi Festival or Winter Solstice Festival is one of the most important Chinese festivals celebrated by the Mainland Chinese, Hong Kong Chinese, Taiwan, Japanese, Vietnamese, Koreans and other East Asian-related people during the Dongzhi solar term, some day between December 21 to December 23.

Meanwhile I had lunch at a new cafe nearby home which was set up and managed by a Swiss couple. Their unique food menu is fabulous and top notch. I am not able to disclose the location which is right opposite my home, for privacy reasons. The above photo shows the Vadai Scones! It's my first time eating this with butter and cream that goes well with a cup of Cappuccino.

This is my favourite vegetarian fried rice which is a hit with the expats. It is so fragrant with lots of tiny crispy bites and assorted nuts like cashew nuts with shredded fine strips of lemon grass.

Once again, Happy Winter Solstice to you and family. May you all be blessed with abundance of happiness and good health always! Muacks!

  1. Happy Winter Solstice, TM! I am not eating tang yuan and instead I ate a whole strip of pork belly today LOL! The two meals you showed look very tasty. Vadai scones with butter and cream sounds very decadent to me. I want! The fried rice also must be very good what with nuts and shredded lemongrass. The portion size is small and Ah Hong Chee got to eat two plates.

    1. Lolol. The portion is small for RM18.00 a plate. It was just nice for me as my colons have not healed after surgery a year ago. Unbelievable!
Meanwhile I have been putting thoughts on partial carnivore diet for 2023 after suffering from severe bleeding which happened after that tomato broth rice.

    1. Wakakakaka. Both you and PH really cracked me up. I really feel sad that I am still unable to eat buffet meals like you. It could be temporary or permanent subject to my recovery.

  3. Happy Winter Solstice, TM! The vegetarian fried rice looks delish. And speaking of cappuccino, a cup would really help for a very cold icy day in my part of the world. It's slippery outside and not going anywhere today.

    1. Hi Lili. I miss the winter days in North America and Upstate New York. I am thankful that I had the chance to experience winter days in NYC, Pennsylvania, California and even Texas! Keep warm Lili and don't ever slip & fall like I did.
Merry Christmas to you and Mister.

    1. Spot on. I have been amazed by their Swiss menu that serves unique Asian dishes. They even have Thai Laksa and Crab Nasi Lemak besides the Western food. Their superb flavours are nothing close to what we eat elsewhere.
As for Vadai, I still prefer the authentic Indian ones that are packed with all the ingredients to make it crunchy.

  6. This is the first time I have heard about this winter festival, and I am happy that you could go out and have your favorite food. That vadai with coffee or tea is a fantastic combination, and it's even better when it rains.

    1. Honestly I prefer no rain here as landslides and big floods would happen around the capital where I live. Too much development have caused the floods and poor irrigation. We have too heavy downpours the whole year.

I love to eat authentic Indian food. I am still dreaming of visiting Jaipur someday.
